Sometimes tutors and students have very different expectations from what will take place during a tutoring session. Part of our job as tutors is to clarify those expectations from the beginning, so that the tutee understands our ultimate goal: independence of the learner.
Tutee Expectations (what the tutee should expect from a tutor and session)
- Punctual
- Courteous and professional
- Knowledgeable
- Enthusiastic
- Trained
- Will model some problem-solving and give time for practice
- Organizational strategies
- Resourceful
- Encouraging
Student Expectations (what we expect from students)
- Bring your course materials, including syllabus, text, practice materials, etc.
- Be punctual and regular in attendance.
- Be prepared with questions on concepts you do not understand and/or practice problems.
- Be open to discussing what is most difficult about the course.
- Do not skip class to come to tutoring. We cannot replace the learning that takes place from lectures.
- Do not ask tutors to complete graded assignments. They are able to ask leading questions and recommend steps, but they will not do the work nor provide answers.
