Language Proficiency (FLPE)

Foreign Language Proficiency Examinations (FLPE)

UF students may use the FLPE to prove proficiency in a foreign language and thus achieve an exemption from a foreign language requirement.  (See “Degree and Graduation Policies” in Undergraduate Catalog(opens in new tab) for UF’s Foreign Language Requirement.)  Among others, UF uses BYU’s FLATS exams for proficiency purposes.  The total cost for the proficiency exam (exam plus proctoring fee) is $80.

  • $50 exam fee to BYU (paid in step 1) If taking at UF do not select Proctor 360
  • $30 proctor fee to UF (paid in step 2)

UF does not grant credit for BYU tests; instead your foreign language requirement will be waived if your score meets the required level for your college.

Testing Dates

FLATS testing is only done through Zoom.  Times and dates are available when you pay your proctor fee on step 2.  You are required to have a microphone and a video camera.

Please Note: If you want your test results sent to UF.  DO NOT CHOOSE PROCTOR 360

  • Students cannot retake the same Foreign Language Proficiency test within a 6-month period. Doing so will invalidate both scores.  Taking the proficiency test for a different language within a 6-month period is allowed.

Registration

In order to take a foreign language proficiency exam, you must be registered. Registration is a two-step process.

STEP I: Complete the FLATS Registration Form for Testing through Online Correspondence at https://flats.byu.edu/signupall.php(opens in new tab) .

If you want to take the exam at UF(via Zoom)  DO NOT CHOOSE PROCTOR 360

If you see this message no one including yourself will receive test scores.

To make sure your scores are sent to UF, the page should look like this:

In order to complete registration, BYU requires your payment of $50.00. Please ensure that all information above is entered correctly, then click the “proceed to payment” button below.

You are NOT registered to take the FLATS examination at the University of Florida until you complete the payment for BYU and complete STEP 2 described below. You must COMPLETE BOTH STEPS at least a day prior to the scheduled exam date.

STEP II:    Pay the UF PROCTOR FEE and SCHEDULE your test HERE(opens in new tab).

Please Note:

  • The $30 proctor fee is non-refundable and non-transferable.  (Do not schedule your exam until you are sure you will test on that day.)
  • Only students who registered with BYU, scheduled their test with UF, and who present a government-issued photo ID with signature will be admitted to the testing room.
